Walk to Grantchester and pub lunch   VCS link - click to add this item to your .vcs-enabled calendar software    sign up   info
Winter is here, and what better way to enjoy the shortening days than with a country walk and a splendid pub lunch? Our group of trekkers will meet at the porters' lodge and head across the meadows to Grantchester, the gorgeous country village loved by Byron, Virginia Woolf, and Rupert Brooke. On arrival, we'll find a log fire and a brimming pint of ale (or beverage of your choice) and settle in for a Sunday lunch before tramping back to town before it gets dark.

NOTE CHANGED START TIME OF 11.45AM AT THE PLODGE! This is to make sure we get home before dark...

Sign up so we have an idea of numbers!

Muppets Christmas Carol in the MCR   VCS link - click to add this item to your .vcs-enabled calendar software    sign up   info
The Marleys were dead to begin with...

It's finally here, the long awaited evening of Muppets Christmas Carol. It is a well known fact that Christmas isn't complete without at least one viewing of this masterpiece of culture & wit. If you have seen it before, singing along is of course mandatory (John & I will be holding auditions for the MCR production shortly. The person who can recite the longest stretch of the film wins. John is currently on 47 minutes-an improvement on last year) If you haven't seen it before, I'm afraid that unless the situation is rectified you will not be allowed to return in the new year to continue your course (It was in the small print of your acceptance letter).

So, all joking aside, come along to the MCR on Monday for this heart-warming classic. We'll start watching at about 9pm. Festive nibbles & baked goods will of course be provided. All friends, family & any other distant relatives, grumpy accountants, rat clerks or skating penguins are welcome.

God Bless us, everyone.

Mon, Dec 12th 7:30pm

MCR Open Meeting
Before we break into a Muppet-filled Christmas extravaganza, it's time to see democracy in action while drinking mulled wine and munching snacks. Come along to the MCR to let the committee know your thoughts about the Michaelmas that's been and the year that's to come - what's been good, what could be better, and what you want from your MCR in the future. Starting at 7.30, mighty informal, and with free food. What more could one want?

Thu, Dec 8th 6:45pm

MCR Christmas Dinner   VCS link - click to add this item to your .vcs-enabled calendar software    sign up   info
It's Christmas!

Well, OK, it's not. It's barely even close, but (as I write this) it is at least nearly December! And lets face it, the Christmas lights going up in Market Square means it must be close enough for...CHRISTMAS DINNER!

We'll be starting in the Old Library for a glass of festive mulled wine, before heading to the Hall for the traditional tasty turkey and succulent sausage in bacon. After we've had our Christmas pudding (complete college's infamous brandy sauce) and the usual cheese and port, we'll be heading back to the Old Library for a night of DIY DJ sets from members of the MCR (details of that to follow shortly).

Christmas Dinner is always hugely popular so keep your eyes peeled for an email about sign-up!
Price: £12.00 for MCR members and £14.00 for guests.

Sat, Dec 3rd 7:00pm

Formal swap - Churchill   VCS link - click to add this item to your .vcs-enabled calendar software    sign up   info
Mr Churchill originally wanted to found a British version of MIT, but he later decided on founding a new college at Cambridge. Churchill's hall is the largest at Cambridge: it seats 430 people, and all those seats will be full on this night of revelry!

The theme is deceased famous people, and prizes will be given for the best male and female costumes. After dinner there will be a casino, a silent disco, and a general party. It will be a big affair!

Price: £15

Signup opens Mon 21 Nov @ 7pm
Price: £15.00 for MCR members

Thu, Dec 1st 7:00pm

Graduate talks
This term's talks by graduates will take place in the Harrods' Room at 7 pm.

Four short talks will be given on a wide range of subjects, reflecting the diversity of experience in our MCR:

• Graham Riach - Post-Script: Writing and Memory in Postapartheid South Africa

The postapartheid period has offered writers a freedom of expression unthinkable to those of previous generations. However, this freedom brings with it grave responsibilities, and demands a subtly shaded societal engagement as authors try to answer how and why one should remember, and if and when one should forget. Some twenty years have now passed since the architecture of the South African apartheid state began to be dismantled. As might be expected after a change of this magnitude, postapartheid literature has shown particular concern for issues of history and memory, and the way these leave their mark on the present. Taking examples from recent short stories, I hope to show how this concern is being expressed in some contemporary South African writing.

• Rob Harper - BMI change in survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukaemia

The high survival rate of children with acute leukaemia is one of the success stories of modern medicine. However, long term effects of treatment remain an important cause of suffering in these children. I looked specifically at long term changes in BMI.

• Jerry He - Research & Development contracting between biotech firms and pharmaceutical firms

Pharmaceutical firms are increasingly relying on strategic alliances with multiple biotechnology firms to increase its chances of producing the next blockbuster drug. In practice, these alliances often break down due to information asymmetry, strategic bargaining and moral hazard. Using historical data, we analyze the two-sided market for alliances between multiple biotech & pharmaceutical firms to provide evidence for these sources of inefficiency. An interactive discussion of remedial measures will then ensue.

• Molly Fitzpatrick - Groucho, Harpo, Chico, and Roosevelt: The Domestication of the Marx Brothers in A Night at the Opera

For more than a half a century, the Marx Brothers enjoyed unparalleled success in vaudeville, Broadway, film, radio, and television--a rare achievement, as well as a testament to their barometric adaptability as comedians. I'll discuss their movie career between 1929 and 1935, when the tone of their humor fluctuated in conjunction with the onset of the Great Depression, and later (with the guidance of MGM producer Irving Thalberg), reversed its polarity upon the inauguration of FDR and his New Deal.

Formal swap - Fitzwilliam   VCS link - click to add this item to your .vcs-enabled calendar software    sign up   info
In the shadowy time-before-time that was Cambridge in 1868, many intelligent men were too poor to pay the fees to be part of any of the colleges at Cambridge and were prohibited from being part of the university. In 1869, the university allowed these men to join the university, and in 1887 the Non-Collegiate Amalgamation Club chose the name "Fitzwilliam". The Non-Collegiate Students Board was renamed Fitzwilliam Hall.

In the 20th century, Cambridge became more affordable, and the need for a non-collegiate organization diminished. Fitzwilliam House (as it was renamed) was so beloved, however, that a hue and cry went up, and in 1966 the Queen granted a charter to Fitzwilliam College, which was built on Castle Hill.

The hall's architect was Sir Denys Lasdun, best known for his design of the Royal National Theatre.

Pre- and post-dinner drinks will be included. Wine is BYO or can be purchased from the college bar. There is no corkage. Gowns are optional. Check for the menu later!

Signup opens Wed 16 Nov @ 7:30pm

Wed, Nov 23rd 7:00pm

Formal swap - Trinity Hall   VCS link - click to add this item to your .vcs-enabled calendar software    sign up   info
The lovingly named "Tit Hall" is the fifth-oldest and fifteenth-smallest college at Cambridge. Back in the fourteenth century it was fashionable to name one's institution "Hall" after the actual building. Two hundred years later, King Henry VIII founded a new institution, which he called Trinity College, thus capitalizing on Trinity Hall's academic reputation while using the new term "College" to keep it trendy. This trick was first pulled by Henry VI, who founded King's College while the now-defunct King's Hall still existed.

Some colleges, like Pembroke and Clare, originally styled "Halls", changed their names to the contemporary "College" nomenclature at around the time Trinity College was founded. The recent Clare Hall, completely separate from Clare College, is a delightfully confusing end to this drama.

Trinity Hall's hall is a beautiful white Neoclassical affair with parquet flooring, and the college grounds are outstanding. A swap not to be missed!

Dinner includes pre- and post-dinner drinks in the MCR. Wine is BYO with no corkage.

However, it's a price worth paying!)

Tickets include a three course meal, pre and post dinner drinks. You can bring your own wine but there is a corkage charge of ~£1.50 or you can buy wine from our buttery. The dress code is the usual formal wear, and gowns are optional.

Applications Careers Workshop   VCS link - click to add this item to your .vcs-enabled calendar software    sign up   info
On Wednesday 16th October there will be second Emmanuel Society led careers event. This will start at 7.30pm in Upper Hall and will focus on the skills required for all aspects of the job application procedure.

The workshop will start with an introduction to the evening, followed by brief introductions by each volunteer explaining who they are and which particular aspect of the job application process they'll be covering. These areas will include identifying companies to work for, filling in application forms, writing a CV, preparing for a CV-based interview, coping with case studies, doing group based interviews and so on.

Individual Discussion
The second and more relaxed half of the evening will give you the chance to ask questions, follow up with the volunteers and get individual advice. We'll have groups of chairs set up round coffee tables to encourage discussion, with some areas designated for help with for example CVs and application forms in one place, and interviews in another, and people will be free to move between them.

Hand out
We're putting together a hand out for you to take away, to include:
- A list of the volunteers, with a line on their career path and a contact email for any further questions
- Suggestions from you on the top 3 dos and top 3 don't when applying for a job
- Details about the Emmanuel Careers Database, and contact details for the Cambridge University Careers Service

Formal exchange - Corpus   VCS link - click to add this item to your .vcs-enabled calendar software    sign up   info
My favourite fact about Corpus Christi is that the English phrase 'Nosey Parker' was apparently originally in reference to a previous long-nosed, inquisitive master of theirs called Matthew Parker. So now you know.

Corpus has a beautiful hall, far more colourful than te usual Cambridge wooden panneled affairs. So it's worth signing up for this one just for that!

Wine is not included, but we can bring our own & there's no corkage fee.

Formal Exchange - Jesus   VCS link - click to add this item to your .vcs-enabled calendar software    sign up   info
One of the amusing things about Jesus college is the fact that it's full name is actually "The College of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint John the Evangelist and the glorious Virgin Saint Radegund, near Cambridge". However, it was thought that this name was far too catchy & was costing the college a fortune in ink for letter headings, so the name is generally shorted to 'Jesus College'.

The evening will start at 7pm with pre-drinks followed by a four course meal with port, cheese, coffee & mints

You can wear whatever you like (within reason. No leopard print miniskirts boys) & you won't be needing gowns either as we are guests.

Masquerade dinner at Peterhouse   VCS link - click to add this item to your .vcs-enabled calendar software    sign up   info
Peterhouse is the oldest college in Cambridge. It was founded in 1284 exactly 300 years before Emma - so pretty damn old. It's also one of the smallest colleges, with a tiny little hall with amazing wood paneling. So all in all, a bit of a treat.

The evening will start with sherry in the MCR followed by a sumptuous three course dinner, including wine and port. We will then party on into the night, most likely until we get thrown off the premisses.

Dress is black tie and yes, it is a masquerade, so you will be needing masks. Gowns are required.

Pumpkin carving & film night   VCS link - click to add this item to your .vcs-enabled calendar software    sign up   info
The most important thing about holidays & festivals is that they are the perfect excuse to revert back to our childish ways by getting covered in glitter, PVA glue, or, as in this case, pumpkin juice.

As it is Halloween, the most important activity is of course pumpkin carving. Now I know Sunday it is a little early to be doing this, but the idea is that we can use everyone's efforts to decorate the MCR in time for the dinner on Tuesday.

So, if this tickles your fancy come along to the MCR with a pumpkin at about 8pm to play. We will also bring along a selection of films which could be put on in the background should people wish.

Sign up if you're keen so we have an idea of how many snacks to buy & how many knives to bring!

Intercollegiate Sports day

Having got to know the grads from Jesus, Kings & Clare over pints on Thursday, now it's time to take them on in head-to-head battle on the sports field. Well, it's only so long that friendships can last before an edge of competitiveness creeps in!

If you're not sporty, don't worry, the emphasis is entirely on fun rather than sporting prowess. The day will take the form of a tradditional English sports day, not try-outs for the Cambridge Blues rowing team.

There will be tug of war. There will be egg & spoon races. There will be dodgeball. And of course, there will be prizes!

Battle will commence at 2pm on Jesus green.

Intercollegiate Bar Crawl

So you've just about got settled into the Emma MCR scene, but this is just the beginning! Cambridge has a whole wealth of other colleges on offer to explore. To start your adventures outside the safety of Emma's walls come along to the intercollegiate bar crawl.

We will be starting the evening at Jesus, a beautiful, spacious college with a cosy bar, at 7.30pm. The next stop will be Emma (8.30pm), then it's onto Kings college (9.30pm), one of the most iconic colleges in Cambridge with a warm & inviting bar. We will then finish off the evening at Clare (10.30), just next door. The Clare bar is situated underneath their chapel with fantastic vaulted ceilings.

As well as getting a chance to visit other bars, this event is an excellent opportunity to meet fellow grads from other colleges. Although we'd all agree the Emma grads are the coolest kids in town, it is sometimes nice to socalise with other folk doing your course or to get a change of scenery.

We will meet at 7.10 in Front Court at Emma to head over to Jesus together.

MCR Freshers' Dinner   VCS link - click to add this item to your .vcs-enabled calendar software    sign up   info
Term is beginning and it's time for the first MCR dinner of the year. If you've not been to one before, MCR dinners are run about every fortnight during term and give grads a chance to kick back, eat some very good food, occasionally wear silly clothes, and go dancing afterwards.

For this, our Freshers' Dinner, every new graduate student is signed up automatically. There's always room for error though, so if you're a new fresher then do pop along to the sign-up list, check you're there, and feel free to alter your entry if you have dietary requirements. Any problems, email John on jg545@cam.ac.uk. He's very nice and doesn't mind at all that he's writing this in the third person.

So, what will this dinner entail? We'll be starting at 6.45pm in the Old Library in College with drinks - prosecco, or elderflower for the non-drinkers. At 7.30 we'll head over to Hall for a four-course feast. Just this once, wine is provided with the meal, so there's no need to bring your own. Also, there's no need to wear a gown just yet, as we know you've just arrived and might not have had time to grab one.

After dinner, we'll be heading back to the Old Library for drinks and dancing well into the night, with the ever-present option of an after-after-party in the MCR. All in all, a great way to start your year in Cambridge.

Sign-up for non-freshers (or for any of you that would like to add a guest to your entry) on Thursday 29th September at 7pm. Fingers on buzzers as MCR dinners are always hugely popular and tend to sell out in the blink of an eye. Look forward to seeing you there!

Between noon and 4pm the MCR will be manned by friendly committee members who will answer any burning questions you have, as well as helping you to set up all the University Computing passwords. The MCR can be found in the Queen's Building on the 1st floor (see page 11 of the Freshers' Guide). Come along, have a tea or coffee and say hello!
