Sat, May 15th 2:00pm |
MCR Tennis Tournament
It’s almost summer and that means Wimbledon is right around the corner, so we’ve decided to host our very own premiere tennis tournament on our paddock’s legendary 100% rye grass courts. Well, maybe that bit about the grass is a lie, but join us anyway from 2.00 to 6.00pm or so for doubles action and perhaps a few drinks (BYOB).
In the interest of getting as many people playing as possible, we’ll have one bracket for mixed, men’s, and women’s teams (which only makes sense 37 years after Billie Jean King dominated Bobby Riggs). Sign up as pairs or go solo and we’ll pair you up. You can show up unannounced on the day of the event, and we’ll see if we can’t grant you a wildcard, but try to sign up so we have an idea about the number of teams.
Extra rackets (or racquets) will be on hand for those without, and dressing up is encouraged, as rumo(u)r has it there will be special appearances from Ollie McEnroe and possibly the Queen. Prizes for winning team and best dressed (and potentially for that individual with the least regard for personal injury); format of play to be announced. And pray for sun, as the college is running behind schedule on the installation of the retractable roof.

Price: £18.00 for MCR members and £18.00 for guests.

Thu, May 13th 7:00pm |
Formal Exchange - St Catharine's
The lovely St Catharine's, or Catz, as it is better known, have invited us to dine with them and two other colleges, Kings and Queens - a recipe for good fun! According to wiki, Catz holds a 'friendly rivalry' with Queens and saved itself from a merger with Kings in the 1880s, so perhaps we are there as adjudicators...
Pre-dinner drinks will be served in their MCR from 7pm.
Price: £9.00 for MCR members

Grad Talks - Eleanor Rutherford and Neal Wadhwa
The MCR Grad Talks provide you the opportunity to hear your fellow graduate student talk about their work. The talks will start at 8pm with drinks and food being served from 7.30pm onwards in the Gardner Room (next to Upper Hall). Please do come along to support the speakers and learn a little bit about other people's research.
Eleanor Rutherford - The Polyphonies of the Codex Calixtinus.
The 'Codex Calixtinus' is a twelfth-century manuscript compiled of five books related to the feast of St James and containing a supplement of polyphonic pieces (i.e. music for more than one voice). My research has focused on looking at this polyphonic repertory in terms of the relationship between its performance and its record in writing. Today notation is often perceived as an exact description of a work, prescribing precisely how the music should be performed, whereas it is unlikely that the polyphony as transmitted in the Codex Calixtinus ever existed in a definitive state. Treitler has attempted to break down the false dichotomy between modern perceptions of fixed composed music and variable "improvised" music, using the twelfth-century Vatican Organum Treatise as a model for the variations of polyphonic procedures in Parisian repertories such as the Magnus Liber. Using his work, I am examining the Spanish material from the point of view of patterns of improvisation typical of that repertory.
Neal Wadhwa - Warp Drive Theory
The speed of light, 300,000 kilometers per second, is the maximum speed at which any object or signal can travel in the universe. While we cannot build a propulsion system that enables travel at superluminal speeds, it may be possible to distort space and time in such a way to create a propulsion system that enables travel at effective speeds faster than that of light.
Such a propulsion system would be necessary for interstellar space flight. In science fiction films, television shows and novels, most notably Star Trek, this propulsion system is known as the warp drive. We will discuss the warp drive in the theoretical physics framework of Einstein's theory of general relativity, which explains how matter can be used to bend space and time.

Inside Government During an Election - a talk by the Master
The Master is going to give a talk describing what happens inside government during an election, especially when there is a transition of a new political party into power. This will be adapted from a few talks he has given recently to governmental departments as due to the large turnover in the civil service over the last ten years quite a number of people even inside government don't know what happens.
Come along to the Queens Building Lecture theatre at 9:15pm to find out what is actually happening at the moment inside government. It's the perfect preparation to voting on the 6th...

General Election Hustings in Kings Chapel
On Thursday 6th May, a General Election will be held in the UK that will decide our next government. All indications are that this will be one of the closest elections in recent decades and students could hold the balance of power in Cambridge. Make the most of this unique opportunity for students to challenge the parliamentary candidates for Cambridge, where no one will be able to duck the issues. Come and pin down the politicians who want to represent you in parliament.
We are also joining with NUS and students unions around Britain to ask you to pledge to use your vote to support candidates that would support students and vote against any increase in tuition fees in the next parliament. Pledge to use your vote by taking 30 seconds to visit: http://www.voteforstudents.co.uk/ Through events and online, CUSU will also be providing you with as much information as possible about the General Election, so are informed and able to vote for candidates who stick up for student interests. Our new online hub is the best place to find out more about the election, the candidates and election hustings in Cambridge: http://www.cusu.cam.ac.uk/campaigns/voteforstudents/.

St. George's Day is coming up, and it's time for the MCR to celebrate the Best of English! Afters will combine the charming entertainments and general merriment for which the Emma MCR is rightly famous - we're heading to the Old Library for an old-school disco with cheesy music and dancing for all.
