Living in College

If something in a college property breaks or is observed not to work, the problem
should be reported by writing it in the college maintenance book, located in
the Porters' Lodge. The college maintenance department are committed to keeping
their houses in good working order, and will normally respond promptly to any
problems as long as they have been reported.
It is not recommended to simply leave the matter with the bedder; while many
bedders do report faults, bringing the fault to the attention of College can only
be guaranteed if it is written in the maintenance book.
If, after a reasonable period of time, it is believed that an item entered in
the maintenance book has not received appropriate attention, they are encouraged
to discuss the matter with the Buildings Manager, Tony Smith (office in North
Court), or as a last resort, the Bursar.
It was recognised that co-operation was required on both sides in order that
nobody in College should feel that their privacy could be invaded, yet at the
same time College would be able to carry out maintenance effectively and maintain
safety. The following document was approved at the Buildings and Services commitee
in September 2004
If a member does not feel that their Bedder is fulfilling their responsibilities as detailed above, they are stongly encouraged to at first
discuss the matter politely with their Bedder in person. If further problems persist, then the matter should be discussed with the housekeeper, and as a last
resort the Bursar.
The Bedders' Charter was brokered by ECSU in 2004, and is also applicable to graduates.
This is information provided by College and important reading for those living in College rooms.
If your room does not have working window locks, the college is happy
to fit
them at your request. To do so, please contact the bursar directly on
bursar@emma.cam.ac.uk, and he will arrange for the work to be done as a
priority.
It is worth noting that there have been several burglaries in grad houses
over the past year. These have generally involved the intruder climbing in
through a window. Therefore if you live on the ground floor, or have a
window that is in any other way accessible from outside, it is highly
recommended that you have locks fitted and use them.
Anyone living in college owned accommodation may have one bag per week washed
for them at the hostel laundry in college (staircase H). This is regardless of
whether the college house you live in has a washing machine fitted or not.
If anyone living in private accommodation would like to use the hostel laundry,
they can do so on payment of £15.00 per term. Please contact the
Bursar if you would like to set up this arrangement.
Self service washing machines and dryers are located in North Court, and may be
used by anyone. However, they need to be booked in advance using the sheet in
the Porters' Lodge. Laundry 1 and Laundry 2 are for undergraduates and graduates
and include a washing machine and dryer. Laundry 3 can only be booked by graduates
but only includes use of a washing machine.
The college has arranged with a private contractor for all windows to be
cleaned three times per year. This includes the windows of graduate houses.
When exactly the contractors come around cannot easily be predicted. So,
residents should be aware that cleaners could appear at their window a few
times over the year.
The contractors may be expected to knock before entering rooms from the
inside of houses, and may be asked not to clean on that occassion if it is
incovenient for the occupant. If, however, people experience any problems
with these contractors, please contact the MCR committee and we will ask
college to look into the matter.
Parties in College-owned Rooms
|
Written permission is required for all events in College or College-owned houses at
which there will be more than eight guests. For events in public rooms in College or
in the grounds, the venue should be booked through the Senior Tutor's Secretary,
B3 Front Court, and it will be the Senior Tutor who gives the required permission. For
events in private rooms, permission can be given by the Graduate Tutor. The normal
conditions for any event are that the noise level should not be such as to cause undue
disturbance to neighbours, the event should end by 11.00pm, and the host is responsible
for any damage to College property, any additional work caused for College staff, or
any other misbehaviour at the party.
